What Trackers Actually Collect About You

Not cookies, not exactly. A plain explanation of how a page you visited once ends up shaping the ads you see three weeks later — and what blocking really changes.

The shape of a profile

A tracking profile is rarely a name. It is a long identifier attached to a list of inferences: probable age band, probable income, devices used, places visited, categories browsed, things almost bought.

Individually these are harmless. Together they are specific enough that a health search, a job search or a pregnancy test purchase can be inferred without anyone ever telling anyone.

You are not being watched by one company. You are being described, repeatedly, by a few hundred that have never met you.

How a page becomes data

A typical news page loads content from one domain and scripts from dozens of others. Each of those third parties sees the page you are reading, the device you are on and an identifier that persists between sites.

Because the same handful of ad networks appear on most pages, they observe a large slice of your browsing without ever hosting anything you chose to visit.

What blocking changes

Blocking at the network level stops the request before it is made, so the tracker learns nothing — not even that you were there. That is different from a cookie banner, which mostly changes what a company promises to do with data it still receives.

The side effect is speed. Trackers and ad code account for most of the bytes and nearly all of the delay on a typical page, which is why blocking usually makes browsing feel like a hardware upgrade.
